The island of Flores, first discovered by Portuguese explorers in the early 15th century, boasts a long-standing coffee tradition rooted in its fertile volcanic terrain. The Ngada District—nestled on the slopes of the impressive Inerie Volcano—is the heart of coffee production on Flores, encompassing an estimated 6,000 hectares dedicated to cultivation. Approximately 90% of this area produces Arabica coffee, with prominent varieties including S795 Flores, Typica, Catimor, and Timor hybrids.

Shade trees such as Bamboo and Juria varietals protect the coffee plants from excessive sunlight while enriching the ecosystem. This unique combination of volcanic soil, high-altitude climate, and careful farming practices results in a remarkably smooth-bodied cup of coffee, characterized by deep, syrupy chocolate flavors. From its early Portuguese beginnings to its modern-day specialty reputation, Flores Bajawa Komodo Dragon coffee remains a must-try origin for coffee enthusiasts seeking a bold yet balanced brew.

Flores Bajawa Komodo Dragon coffee is renowned around the world, and one major aspect is due to the strong sense of community among its farmers and producers. All coffee grown in this region is cultivated and processed by farmer-organized cooperatives, ensuring sustainable practices and fair trade principles. In Bajawa alone, there are now 12 different co-ops collaborating to produce exceptional Komodo Dragon coffee. By working together, these dedicated farmers have elevated Flores coffee to new heights, consistently delivering high-quality beans that capture the island’s unique flavor profile and spirit.

This distinctive coffee takes its name from the Komodo dragon—an iconic creature found in nearby Komodo National Park and recognized as the world’s largest living lizard. The name highlights the bold, fearless flavor profile of the coffee beans, while honoring the region’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. By working together, these dedicated farmers have elevated Flores Bajawa Komodo Dragon coffee to new heights, consistently delivering high-quality beans that capture the island’s unique flavor profile and spirit.
