When coffee lovers think of Guatemala, they picture some of the most celebrated growing regions in the world. Rich volcanic soil, towering mountains, cool evenings & generations of coffee-growing expertise have made Guatemalan coffee a favorite among specialty drinkers.

Among all of those regions, one consistently stands above the rest: Huehuetenango.

Our Guatemala Huehuetenango EP (Strictly Hard Bean) is a shining example of why this region has earned its world-class reputation. Roasted to a smooth medium roast, it delivers comforting notes of caramel, milk chocolate & bright orange, balanced by a remarkably clean finish that keeps you coming back for another sip.

What Makes Huehuetenango So Special?

Huehuetenango (pronounced way-way-ten-AHN-go) sits in Guatemala's rugged Western Highlands near the Mexican border. Coffee here is grown at elevations reaching 1,830 meters (6,000 feet), making it one of the highest coffee-growing regions in Central America.

Those elevations aren't just impressive on paper. They directly shape flavor.

Warm days encourage healthy cherry development while cool mountain nights dramatically slow the ripening process. This extended maturation gives the cherries more time to develop natural sugars, resulting in beans with greater sweetness, complexity & density.

"The result is coffee that's vibrant without being overpowering, sweet without tasting artificial & incredibly balanced from the first sip to the last."

What Does "Strictly Hard Bean" Mean?

Our Guatemala coffee carries the Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) designation, a grading reserved for coffee grown at the highest elevations, where cooler temperatures force the cherries to mature more slowly.

Slower maturation creates denser beans packed with flavor compounds. During roasting, these dense beans develop exceptional complexity while maintaining clarity and sweetness in the cup.

For coffee lovers, SHB is a strong indicator of premium growing conditions and outstanding cup quality. It's shorthand for "this coffee had every advantage."

European Preparation (EP): A Higher Standard

Growing exceptional coffee is only half the story. Our Guatemala Huehuetenango is also prepared using the European Preparation (EP) standard.

Before the coffee is exported, every batch is carefully hand-sorted until fewer than eight defects remain per 300 grams of green coffee.

That level of quality control produces an exceptionally clean cup, allowing the coffee's natural sweetness & delicate citrus character to shine without distraction. It's meticulous work, but it's one of the reasons specialty coffee tastes so much better than mass-produced alternatives.

Additional Flavor Characteristics

  • Floral aromatics
  • Light nuttiness
  • Orange peel brightness
  • Crisp, wine-like acidity
  • Exceptionally clean finish

The first sip opens with silky caramel sweetness and creamy milk chocolate. As the coffee cools slightly, subtle floral aromas and delicate orange peel emerge, adding brightness without overwhelming the cup. The finish is crisp, refreshing & remarkably clean, with a gentle wine-like acidity that makes every sip feel lively rather than heavy.

Fully Washed & Patio Sun-Dried

Our Guatemala coffee undergoes a fully washed process, where the fruit is removed before the beans are fermented, washed & dried. This processing method highlights clarity and origin character, allowing the unique terroir of Huehuetenango to take center stage.

After washing, the coffee is patio sun-dried, a traditional drying method that helps preserve sweetness while promoting even moisture throughout each bean. The combination creates a cup that's bright, balanced & wonderfully clean.
